History of Enterprise

The Paiute Indians were the first people to settle in the Las Vegas area. The gypsum mines to the west of Arden spurred the development of the town in 1905, and Arden became a railroad hub for the area. Before Clark County was established in 1909, this region was a part of Lincoln County. A water tower constructed in 1926 is the eldest building there.

The county commissioners created an Enterprise education department in 1918, which is when the name "Enterprise" was first used to describe the area. One historian suggests that the term was used at the time because of its upbeat tone.

In a deadly accident of April 21, 1958, United Air Flight 736 as well as an Air Force plane hit head-on. 49 people were killed. Near the junction between South Decatur Boulevard as well as West Cactus Avenue, next to the neighborhood of Southern Highlands, commercial development has infringed on the site of the airplane crash, which in 1958 was uninhabited desert scrubland. The son of one of the victims erected a modest metal cross in 1999 as just a memorial towards the dead.

Residents of Enterprise petitioned for incorporation upon December 17, 1996 so that they may maintain the town's rural character. This was done so that neighboring Henderson wouldn't be able to annex it. Almost immediately after that, the Clark County commissioners moved to annex roughly five square miles of territory into adjacent Spring Valley. This area includes that master-planned development of Rhodes Ranch, as well as a regional park. Commissioner Erin Kenny conceived of the annexation scheme. Bruce L. Woodbury cast the lone dissenting vote, but everyone else approved of the annexation. Yvonne Atkinson Gates, chairperson of such county commission, opposed the annexation but voted for it because she planned to revisit the issue at the following advisory group meeting scheduled for January 1997. Residents, both official and unofficial, were opposed to the expansion because they were denied a vote on the matter.

On January 19, 1999, the Clark County Commission and also the Henderson City Council approved an interlocal agreement to annex between five thousand and six thousand acres of land into the City of Henderson. The majority of this land was owned by the Bureau of Land Management and was located southwest of both the master-planned community of Anthem; however, approximately one thousand four hundred acres of land was previously part of the Enterprise development. The Sloan exit off of Interstate 15 was a primary motivation for the city's annexation efforts, along with the preservation of Lake Mead Boulevard (now St. Rose Parkway). Enterprise locals were against the annexation proposal because they valued maintaining a rural character. Some locals were informed by county commissioners that the county would be powerless to prevent Henderson from annexing a portion of their town, and that the interlocal deal was the most they could do. Section 33 was a densely populated area of Enterprise, but according to this arrangement Henderson can only annex portions 26 and 34, that are now undeveloped.
